We’re all familiar with the standard 9-to-5 work hours, including commute time to and from work. Even as the pandemic turned the world on its head and we all transitioned to remote work, the number of sitting hours either remained the same or increased, with many of us enduring long work hours of 9+ hours. However, even before and after the pandemic, there has been a significant problem plaguing us: the sedentary lifestyle.
On average, we tend to sit for 6 to 8 hours daily. Much of this is due to work and school demands, especially with long commutes in traffic jams. Even at home, we all probably continue sitting to watch television or read. (I’m guilty of this too!) Unfortunately, this sedentary lifestyle can lead to various health problems, especially with the cardiovascular system, our heart and blood circulation.
The primary cause of our sedentary lifestyles is often our obligations. Work and school require us to sit for many hours because that’s where our desks and workstations are. However, with the high likelihood of entering the Spatial Computing era in early 2024, we would no longer be “one with the office chair”. A simple headset could free our workstations and everyday tasks from the desk and allow us to freely move around while our programs and software are suspended in virtual space.
Even in a lot of advertisements and promotions of spatial computing devices (thanks to Apple, VR and AR is getting a new name), users are shown to be active and standing, rarely sitting. This could be what we actually need! A reduction in the alarmingly high rate of obesity due in part by limited physical activity is always welcome. While spatial computing is still several months away, it may provide us with the advantage of improving our health and reducing or eliminating the sedentary lifestyle. It might also serve as the final blow to the movement to bring associates back to the office since it will be possible for us to occupy the same virtual space.
But if spatially computing takes off, and it most likely will, the excuse for “collaboration” to justify a return to the office and maintain a sedentary lifestyle will become obsolete. But even in this case, it will still serve a benefit to businesses since it will be possible to reduce the overhead and administrative costs associated with operating a classical office space.
(See that? We just pulled an Apple and came up with a new name for “the office”.)
